Foot Facts
Throughout history, the majority of the human population has neglected the importance of properly fitted shoes. Many are suffering from the repercussions of wearing shoes and high heels that bind feet in a way that does not support proper alignment of the body. The average human feet are not proportionate; one foot is usually larger than the other. Therefore, one must always purchase shoes that cater to the larger foot. A shoe that is too small can cause serious foot aliments such as in-grown toenails which can cause damage severe enough that they may need to be removed. Neuroma, which is the impingement of the nerve between two metatarsal bones in the foot, can occur if a shoe is too narrow. Other problems that could arise from ill fitting shoes are bunions and heel spurs. Bunions can sometimes be hereditary but can also be the result of wearing shoes that are too tight on the forefoot.
Wearing shoes with proper support and good shock absorption can help limit ailments such as shin splints, heel spurs, and planter fasciitis. Some foot ailments may be a sign of more serious conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, nerve damage, and circulatory disorders. Diabetes is the leading disease that can cause foot ailments, due to neuropathy (the lack of sensation), individuals without proper foot care and knowledge can result in open ulcers and in severe cases lower limb amputation.
